Friends:

Ballanced Energy is neither Lazy, nor Restless!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Balance_Scale.big

Laziness overcomes one strong in concentration and weak in energy,
since concentration favours idle inaction...
Agitation and restlessness overpowers one strong in energy and weak
in concentration, because energy stimulate agitation...
But concentration coupled & ballanced with energy cannot lapse into laziness,
& energy coupled & ballanced with concentration cannot provoke restlessness...
Therefore should these two abilities be ballanced, since excellence of effort
and mental absorption arises out of the even ballancing of the mental abilities.

The Layman's Way to Happiness:

By Prof. Lily de Silva, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happiness_magnet

Life in the modern age has become particularly trying and problematic.
Though it remains a fact that the standard of living has generally improved,
man is still suffering immensely under the weight of present-day living.
The physical condition of man has been reduced to such a pathetic level that
he succumbs to untimely death by killer diseases such as cancer, heart failure,
diabetes, etc. to an unprecedented degree. Mentally, he is so tension-ridden
that he has forgotten the art of relaxing, and he cannot even enjoy sound
sleep without the aid of tranquilizers. In this set up interpersonal relations
have become so brittle and vulnerable that the divorce rate has indeed become
alarmingly high, thus letting loose a whole series of other social problems such
as uncared-for children, juvenile delinquency, suicide, etc. Thus life has become
a problematic burden and a solution to make life more tolerable and enjoyable
is a great and pressing need.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Udawattekele.forest.sanctuary.kandy

As the word of the Buddha is of everlasting value and universal applicability,
and as the Buddha preached not only to monks and nuns but also to the lay
public as well, it is useful to find a teaching of the Buddha which is relevant
to our present-day problems:
In the Pattakammavagga of the Anguttara Nikaya (A II, 69) the Buddha
preached a sutta to Anathapindika on the fourfold pleasures of a layman.
It is our considered opinion that this sutta offers adequate insight to meet
the demands of the present-day problems as well. The four types of pleasure
listed there are:
1: Atthisukha, the pleasure of having material wealth;
2: Bhogasukha, the pleasure of enjoying material wealth;
3: Ananasukha, the pleasure of being debtless; and
4: Anavajjaskha, the pleasure of being blameless.
Let us take these for discussion one by one and see how these four sources
of pleasure can be harnessed for living a happy life in the present-day world.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happiness.rl

Atthisukha — Man should not only have a righteous means of living, avoiding
blameworthy trades such as dealing in meat, liquor, poison, firearms & slavery,
he should also entertain a wholesome attitude towards his right occupation.
For instance, if a doctor welcomes epidemics in the locality in order to make
much money, or a trader hopes for natural calamities to send market prices up,
the money earned by such unscrupulous individuals is not righteous money as
their intentions are impure and foul. Also one should not deceive or exploit
others in carrying out one's occupation. Exerting oneself with great energy,
one should earn one's living, and such hard-earned wealth is called righteous
wealth (dhammika dhammaladdha). Again one could have great wealth, but if
one does not experience a sense of contentment with what one has, one cannot
really enjoy atthisukha or the pleasure of having. The amassing of wealth of
such a person is like trying to fill a bottomless vessel. This is one of the widely
spread maladies we see in the present-day society. Inordinate expansion of
wealth becomes a source not of happiness, but of greed, anxiety, and envy.
Such wealth exposes the possessor to the jealousies and manoeuvres of other
unscrupulous individuals, hence the occurrence of blackmailing and kidnapping
from time to time. But if one does have a correct means of earning one's living
and the correct attitude to wealth, one can escape many of the hazards which
money brings in its wake to modern man...

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happy-feet-6

Bhogasukha — Wealth has only instrumental value and the proper enjoyment
of wealth is an art which is worth carefully cultivating. Buddhism deplores both
extravagance and miserly hoarding. One must maintain a healthy balanced
standard of living according to one's means. If, in the enjoyment of wealth,
one overindulges in sense pleasures, one is bound to run into health hazards in
a very short time. If, for instance, one overindulges in food just because one
can afford it, one will soon be overcome by diseases such as heart failure, high
blood pressure and diabetes. Such a one will be faced with the situation of
"cutting his neck with his own tongue." Moderation in food is a virtue praised
in Buddhism and it is a health-promoting habit. Often in the name of enjoying
wealth, man cultivates unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking.
It is paradoxical that man, who actually loves himself most, should act as if
he were his own worst enemy by indulging in habits which ultimately reduce
him to a physical wreck. It is medically established that smoking causes the
highest percentage of lung cancer, and that drinking causes irreparable damage
to vital organs of the body including brain and liver. If only one pauses to just
ponder over one's own welfare, and if only one entertains at least some degree
of compassion towards oneself, one would not get into the clutches of these
vicious habits. Wealthy men often end up in the pitiful plight of the ant fallen
in the pot of honey. Such men did not know the art of enjoying bhogasukha.
The regard the body as an instrument for pleasure, and they wear out and
debilitate the body's capacity for enjoyment in double quick time, long before
the natural process of wear and tear sets in. If we love ourselves, we have to
treat our bodies with proper care without taxing it with overindulgence and
deprivation. It is with the body that we can enjoy not only the pleasures of
the senses, but even the spiritual bliss of Nibbana. Another aspect of the joy
of wealth is the art of sharing. Without being an Adinnapubbaka, a miserly
"never-giver," if one learns to share one's riches with those worthy, the less
fortunate and have-nots, one will have the noble experience of rejoicing at
the joy of another. At the same time one will learn the love and good will of
others, instead of becoming the target of envy, jealousy and intrigue.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happy.Buddha

Ananasukha — The pleasure of being debtless is the third quality discussed
in our sutta. Economically if one can be completely free of debt, one is indeed
a very fortunate person. To be really debtless in society one has to discharge
one's obligations scrupulously. As a wage earner one has to discharge one's
duties for which one is paid, otherwise one can be indebted to the employer.
As a parent one has to fulfill one's obligations to one's children. In our society
children are taught to worship and look after their parents, and it is well to
bear in mind that parents too have to qualify themselves for the honour they
receive by being dutiful parents. It should be emphasized that fathers who
neglect their families as a result of their addiction to vices such as drinking
and gambling fall far short of the ideal of debtlessness. One can have the
satisfaction of being debtless only if one has fulfilled one's obligations in all
social roles one has to perform.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happy-new-year-20111

Anavajjasukha — The satisfaction of leading a blameless life is the highest
form of satisfaction that a layman can have. Every society has a code of
ethics to be followed by its members. According to Buddhism the minimum
code of ethics regulating the life of its adherent disciples is the pańcasila:
the Five Precepts. If one practices these virtues, one can have the satisfaction
of leading a righteous life to a great extent. Refraining from doing to others
what one does not like others to do to oneself, is the basic inviolable principle
underlying these virtues. Buddhism speaks of hiri and ottappa, the sense of
shame and the fear of doing wrong, as deva dhamma or celestial qualities.
These are the basic qualities which separate man from the animal kingdom.
Unlike the animals man has a conscience, which makes him squeamish about
doing wrong... Buddhism recognizes blameless mental activity as well.
Mental activities which arise from greed, hatred & ignorance are detrimental
and thus blameworthy. Let us see how such mental behaviour causes unhappiness.
Take for instance the case of a person who is angry. What are the symptoms
of anger? Hard breathing, accelerated heart beat, faster circulation of blood,
feeling hot, sweating, trepidation, restlessness, etc. — these are the physical
manifestations of anger. These are certainly not pleasant physical experiences.
Each time the cause of anger is remembered, even though the rage of physical
manifestations of anger may not be that marked, one feels quite restless and
mentally ill at ease. We use expressions such as "boiling with anger," "I got the
devil on to me," etc. to mean getting angry, and these sayings are literally
expressive of the situation. It is impossible for one to be angry and happy at
the same time. An irritable person is truly a very sad person, and what is worse
he infects others around him too with the same sadness. The cultivation of
sublime modes of behaviour such as loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic
joy and equanimity are truly conducive to happy living. Those who live with
such attitudes habitually are pleasant and amicable people, who can be happy
when all alone, as well as in any company.

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Happy_is_he_who_makes_Others_Happy

If we truly understand the sound significance of these 4 kinds of happiness
elucidated in our sutta, and translate them into action, then our life will be
much more pleasant, easy and happy even in this modern age.

Kindly shared by Ven. Vicittalankara, Mumbai, India.

Friends:

How is Release by Friendliness Achieved?

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Beautiful_release3

The Blessed Buddha once said:
And how, Bhikkhus, is the mental release by universal friendliness
achieved? What does this liberation have as its destination, what is
its culmination, what is its sweet fruit, what is the final goal of such
mental release by universal friendliness?
Here, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu dwells pervading the frontal quadrant,
with a mind imbued with infinite friendliness, so the second quarter,
the third quarter, and the fourth quarter. Thus above, below, across,
and everywhere, and to all beings as to himself, he dwells pervading
the entire universe with a mind saturated with unlimited friendliness,
immense, exalted, vast, measureless, without hostility, without enmity,
without any ill will! Thus prepared and expanded he then develops:
1: The Awareness Link to Awakening joined with limitless friendliness.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening fused with such friendliness.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening together with infinite friendliness.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening accompanied with absolute friendliness.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening linked with open friendliness.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening associated with friendliness.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening joined with endless friendliness.

Based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, and culminating in release.

If he then wishes:
May I dwell experiencing the repulsive in the unrepulsive & tempting,
then he can dwell experiencing the repulsive therein. If he wishes:
May I dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in the disgusting repulsive,
then he dwells experiencing the unrepulsive in whatever disgusting!
If he wishes: May I dwell experiencing the repulsive in what is both
unrepulsive & repulsive, he dwells experiencing repulsive disgust in it.
If he wishes: May I dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in what is both
unrepulsive & repulsive, he experiences only unrepulsive beauty by it!
If he wishes: Avoiding both the repulsive and the unrepulsive, may I
dwell in equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending, then he
dwells in equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending. Or else
he enters and dwells in the mental deliverance by the beautiful...
I tell you Bhikkhus for a wise Bhikkhu here who has not penetrated
to an even more superior mental release, this release of mind by pure
infinite friendliness has the beautiful deliverance as its culmination!

PostSubject: What Causes Emergence?   Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 EmptyWed Jun 29, 2011 5:12 am

Friends:

Origination & Cessation of the 4 Reference Objects:

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Origination1

The Blessed Buddha once said: I will teach you the origination and passing
away of the reference objects of the Four Foundations of Awareness.
Listen to that:

Appearance of Nutriment produces the emergence of the Body.
Disappearance of Nutriment produces the passing away of the Body.

Appearance of Contact produces the emergence of Feeling.
Disappearance of Contact produces the passing away of Feeling.

Appearance of Name-&-Form produces the emergence of Mind.
Disappearance of Name-&-Form produces the passing away of Mind.

Appearance of Attention produces the emergence of Phenomena.
Disappearance of Attention produces the passing away of Phenomena.

Therefore: Considering, contemplating, analyzing, and always recollecting:
Body merely as transient forms grown on and out of Food;
Feeling only as passing emotions arised from Contact;
Mind just as changing moods emerged from Naming-and-Forming;
Phenomena only as momentary mental states created by Attention...
repeatedly, thoroughly, and completely, is called initiating & developing the
Four Foundations of Awareness, which - in itself - is the mental treasure
par excellence, leading steadily and straight to the Deathless Element...
Deep, deep, subtle and somewhat enigmatic is this profound classification!

Friends:

How to reach the Ease and Peace of Ceasing?

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Silencing.blgif

At Savatthi, the Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus, when the experience of stilling, ending, stopping, and ceasing
is developed and cultivated, then it is of great fruit and immense benefit!
It leads to great good, it leads to great security from bondage, it leads
to a great sense of urgency, it leads to living in fearless ease and comfort!
How, Bhikkhus, is the experience of ceasing developed and cultivated, so
that it is of great fruit and benefit? Here, the Bhikkhu systematically
develops the:
1: The Awareness Link to Awakening, joined with the experience of ceasing.
2: The Investigation of states Link to Awakening, while examining full stilling.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening, perceiving an ultimate ending of all activity.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening, while laughing at the complete cessation of all.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening, accompanied by calm & serene silencing.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening, focused on fading away of all states.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening, indifferent even at the final stopping,
while being based upon seclusion, disillusion, halting, and maturing in release...

It is in this very way that the experience of stilling and ceasing into peace
is developed and cultivated, so that it is of great advantage, great benefit,
great good, great security from bondage, great sense of urgency, and
living in the great ease of calmed, fearless and imperturbable comfort!
Bhikkhus, when the perception of ceasing is developed and cultivated
in this way fused and enhanced by the Seven Links to Awakening, one of
two fruits is to be expected: Either final knowledge in this very life or,
if there is a remaining residue of clinging, the state of non-returning...

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Chain-7links

A not very well known Bhikkhu once asked the Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir, 'The 7 Links to Awakening, The 7 Links to Awakening' is it
always said. In what way are they called Links to Awakening?
They lead to Enlightenment, friend, it is therefore they indeed are called
Links to Awakening. Here, Bhikkhu, when one trains, cultivates and refines:

1: The Awareness Link to Awakening: sati-sambojjhanga.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening: dhammavicaya-sambojjhanga.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening: viriya-sambojjhanga.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening: piti-sambojjhanga.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening: passaddhi-sambojjhanga.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening: samadhi-sambojjhanga.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening: upekkha-sambojjhanga.

based upon seclusion, disillusion, and ceasing, maturing & culminating in release,
then these Seven Links to Awakening, becomes Noble and liberating. They lead
any one who trains them all out, they lead to utter revulsion, to intense disgust,
to dispassion, to cessation of craving and greed, to peace, to direct knowledge,
to complete destruction of suffering. They lead to Enlightenment, to Nibbana...

Kamma and Fruit = Action and Reaction = Cause and Effect!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Kamma_and_fruit

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Beings are owners of their actions (kamma = karma), inheritor of
their actions, are created by their actions, linked to their actions,
their actions produce their destiny. Whatever actions they do;
good as evil, the resulting reaction and effect will be only theirs!
There is one who kills living beings, steals what belongs to others,
commits adultery with other's partners; speaks lies, uses divisive
and aggressive speech, prattle empty gossip; is covetous, envious,
jealous, wicked-minded, & of evil views. Such one is creeping in all
actions both bodily, verbal, and mental. Hidden & secret are such
one's actions, words, & thoughts, of ulterior & concealed motives.
But I tell you: Whoever pursues hidden ways and objects will have
to expect one of these two results: Either the torture of hell, or
birth among the creeping animals. Thus is it with all rebirth of any
being: They will be reborn according to their actions (kamma)...
When reborn, they experience the exact effects of their actions.
Therefore I declare: Beings are owners of their actions (kamma),
inheritor of their actions, are created by their actions, linked to
their actions, as a shadow that never leaves! Their actions produce
and condition their future destiny. Whatever action they perform;
good as evil, the resulting reaction and effects will be only theirs!
Kamma causes and creates rebirth! A shadow that never leaves!

Develops his mind and his understanding,
Then as Bhikkhu, earnest and intelligent,
He disentangles this entangled knot...
SN I 13

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Disentangling

Just as a man standing firm on the ground and taking up a well-sharpened
sword might disentangle a great mesh of bamboos, so too, does this Bhikkhu
possessing 4 things: Morality, Concentration, Energy, and Understanding cut
away the maze of mess and demolish all the labyrinthine snarls of confusion!
Vism I 4

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Disentangle_knots

Disentangling from the world by withdrawal unravels the outer complication...
Disentangling from name-&-form, body and mind, releases the inner intricacy...

one disengages & detaches from this enmeshed, ensnaring & perplexing puzzle!

The 7 Links to Awakening develop Sequentially!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Sequential_access

The Blessed Buddha once explained:
Whenever withdrawn in body and withdrawn in mind one reflects on the
Buddha-Dhamma, then the Awareness Link to Awakening arises and develops.
Thus acutely aware one examines that!

Whenever examining a mind state, then the Investigation Link to Awakening
arises and develops. While thus being curious & enthusiastically investigating,
keen energy is aroused!

Whenever energy is aroused in one who is enthusiastic, then the Energy Link
to Awakening arises and develops. While energetic & enthusiastic one succeeds:
Therefore Joy is born!

Whenever succeeding in eager joy, then the Joy Link to Awakening arises and
develops. One thus joyous becomes mentally satisfied and therefore calmed
both in body and in mind!

Whenever calmed in body and mind, then the Tranquillity Link to Awakening
arises & develops. One thus satisfied, calmed, serene, settled and tranquil in
both body and mind becomes Happy!

Whenever calmed & comfortable in the body and tranquil & happy in the mind,
then the Concentration Link to Awakening arises and develops. When mentally
concentrated one reviews all states rationally & reasonably as if from above!

Whenever one well balanced reviews all mental states rationally & reasonably,
then the Equanimity Link to Awakening arises and develops. In Equanimity one
knows and sees things right as they really are and later become.

It is in this very way that The Seven Links to Awakening develop sequentially,
one after the other; successively one leading to, and producing the next...

How is the Mental Release by Mutual Joy?

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Mudita.p

The Blessed Buddha once explained:
How is the release of mind by infinite mutual joy (Mudita) achieved?
What does this liberation have as its destination, what is its culmination,
what is its sweet fruit, and what is the ultimate goal of mental release
by universally mutual, unselfish, altruistic, appreciative & rejoicing joy?
Here, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu dwells pervading the frontal quadrant with a
mind imbued with infinite mutual joy, so the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quadrant.
As above, so below, across, and everywhere to all beings as for himself,
he dwells pervading the entire cosmos with a mind fully saturated with
unlimited mutual joy, immense, exalted, measureless, without hostility,
without any enmity, without any trace of ill will, of jealousy or of envy!
Thus prepared and mentally quite expanded, he then develops:
1: The Awareness Link to Awakening joined with limitless mutual joy.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening fused with such mutual joy.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening together with infinite mutual joy.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening accompanied with absolute mutual joy.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening linked with noble mutual joy.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening associated with mutual joy.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening joined with endless mutual joy.

Based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, and culminating in release...

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Full.joy

If he then wishes:
May I dwell experiencing repulsion by any attractive & tempting object,
then he can dwell experiencing repulsiveness therein. If he wishes: May I
dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in any disgusting and repulsive object,
then he experiences pleasing beauty in whatever disgusting & ugly thing!
If he wishes: Avoiding both the repulsive & the unrepulsive, may I dwell
in equanimity, just aware & clearly comprehending, then he experiences
equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending! When meditating he
can completely transcend the realm of infinitude of space, only aware
that consciousness is infinite, he can enter and dwell in the sphere of the
infinitude of consciousness.. I tell you Bhikkhus for a quite wise Bhikkhu
here, who has not yet penetrated to an even more superior mental release,
the mental release by infinite, altruistic and mutual joy has the sphere of
the infinitude of consciousness as its culmination!

Mutual joy is the proximate cause of contentment.

Mutual joy also eliminates jealousy and envy! Absence of mutual joy

Friends:

Purity of Virtue is the root of Perfection!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Virtue

His virtue is immaculate. His wearing the bowl and robe pleases and inspires trust.
His going forth will bear its fruit. A pure Bhikkhu never fears that self-reproach
will obsess and consume his mind, since there is indeed no darkness inside the sun...
A Bhikkhu of bright virtue shines forth even in the forest of reclusive ascetics,
by the radiance of his past deeds, just like the moon lights up the clear night sky...
Now if the body smell of pure Bhikkhus can succeed in pleasing even the deities,
what then of the perfume of their virtue? It is a far more splendid scent than all
the other perfumes in the world, because the fragrance of pure morality spreads
unhindered in all directions! The favours done for a pure & virtuous one, even when
only few, will bear great fruit! The pure one thus becomes a fountain of advantage!
No fetid fermentations plagues a virtuous one, since his pure behaviour digged out
the root of future suffering in lives to come. Excellence among humans & also even
among deities, if longed for, is not hard to gain for one whose morality is perfected!
However, when ethics is fully perfected, then mind seeks only the supreme Nibbana:
The state where utterly pure peace prevails! Such is the blessed fruit of clean virtue,
ethics, rectitude, goodness, integrity, righteousness, and high-mindedness: It awards
fulfilment, so let a wise one know it well: This root of all the branches of perfection!

Remote & Solitary is Forest Bliss!

The forest bhikkhu pays much attention to the experience of forest:
Thereby he enters deeper yet unattained depths of concentration.
By living remote he is not distracted by any unsuitable phenomena.
He is free from anxiety and stress. He abandons attachment to life.
He enjoys a taste of the bliss of seclusion, and the silenced peace.
He lives secluded and apart. Calm and remote abodes delight his heart.
The hermit that in woods can dwell alone, may gain the bliss as well.
Whose savour is beyond the price of royal bliss even in any paradise.
So let the forest delight a wise man for his precious dwelling's site.

who meditates alone in the forest,

Sariputta explains the 7 Links to Awakening!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Clothes.bl

Venerable Sariputta once said: Friends!

Friend; the Bhikkhus replied. Venerable Sariputta then explained this:
Friends, there are these Seven Links to Awakening. What seven?

These are the Seven Links to Awakening!
In whichever of these 7 Links to Awakening, I wish to dwell in the morning,
in that I abide in the morning; in whichever I wish to dwell at noon, in that
I abide at noon; in whichever I wish to dwell in the evening, in that I abide
in the evening... Suppose a king or a minister had a cupboard full of clothes
of many various colours, then whichever pair of clothes he wished to put on
in the morning, that he would put on in the morning; whichever clothes he
wished to put on at noon, that he would put on at noon; & whichever clothes
he wished to put on in the evening, that he would put on in the evening: so too,
in whichever of these 7 Links to Awakening, I wish to abide in for whatever
period, in that indeed I easily abide dwelling fully absorbed by that aspect...
If it occurs to me that now there is The Awareness Link to Awakening present
in me, then it occurs to me that it is measureless, & it occurs to me that it is
well established; and while it is remaining I know that it remains; and if it falls
away in me, then I know instantly that it faded away caused by this or that
specific condition or definable circumstance! So too with the other six links
to awakening. I notice and know both their presence, ceasing and absence!

Open Air Tree Root Dwelling Teaches Transience!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Tree_roots2

The Blessed One often praised Tree Roots as dwelling place:
Secluded in mind and guarded well by deities one lives there
truly devoted without longing or urging for any city or house.
And when the tender leaves are seen, first bright carmine red,
then turning green, and finally to shades of yellow as they fall,
one relinquishes mistaken belief in permanence once and for all.
Tree roots is thus granted by him the One as a serene scene no
wise and clever one should reject at all, for study of rise & fall!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus, just as all the rafters in a peaked house slant, slant, slope, tilt, tend,
incline & veer towards the roof peak, even so, when a bhikkhu begin to develop
and cultivate the Seven Links to Awakening, then he indeed slants, slopes, tilts,
tends, inclines & veers towards Nibbana... Why and how is this convergence so?
When, friends, a Bhikkhu trains, develops, expands, consolidates and refines:

1: The Awareness Link to Awakening: sati-sambojjhanga.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening: dhammavicaya-sambojjhanga.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening: viriya-sambojjhanga.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening: piti-sambojjhanga.

7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening: upekkha-sambojjhanga.

based upon seclusion, disillusion, and ceasing, maturing & culminating in release,
then these 7 Links to Awakening and the repeated training of them, in and by
themselves, make him slant, slope, tilt, tend, veer and incline towards Nibbana...

PostSubject: Today Esala Full-Moon Poya day!   Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 EmptyThu Jul 14, 2011 6:07 am

Friends

How to be a Real True Buddhist through Observance?

This Esala Poya day is the full-moon of July, which is noteworthy since on this celebrated day:
1: The Blessed Buddha preached his First Sermon: The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.
2: The Bodhisatta was conceived in Queen Maya who dreamt a white elephant entered her side.
3: The Blessed Buddha made the Great Withdrawal from the world at the age of 29 years.
4: The Blessed Buddha performed the Twin Miracle (yamaka-patihariya) of dual appearance.
5: The Blessed Buddha explained the Abhi-Dhamma in the Tavatimsa heaven to his mother.
6: The ordination of Prince Arittha at Anuradhapura, under Arahat Mahinda on Sri Lanka.
7: The foundation of the celebrated Mahastupa & enshrinement of relics by King Dutugemunu.
8: The next day the yearly 3 months rains retreat (vassa) of Buddhist Bhikkhus start.

The Buddha performing the Twin Miracle of simultaneously producing water & flames from his body.

On such Uposatha Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes
the Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed,
with clean bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue,
and bows first three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees and
head touch the floor. Then, with joined palms in front of the heart,
one recite these memorized lines in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.

I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.

I request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd …
I request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.

I will respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Mister.meditator

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.

As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Miss.meditator

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's own
eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much better
than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in & to this world!
This is the very start on the path towards Nibbana -the Deathless Element-
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Bliss, initiated by Morality,
developed further by Dhamma-Study and fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Today indeed is Pooya or Uposatha or observance day, where any lay Buddhist
normally keeps the Eight Precepts from sunrise until the next dawn...
If any wish an official recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha, they may simply
forward the lines starting with "I..." signed with name, date, town & country
to me or join here. A public list of this new Saddhamma-Sangha is here!

The 7 Fruits of the 7 Links to Awakening!

Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 Nibbana.brw

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus, when the 7 Links to Awakening have been developed, completed
and refined, the winning of the seven fruits is indeed to be expected.
What are the benefits of these 7 fruits?

They are, either:
1: One attains final knowledge early in this very life. Or:
2: One attains final knowledge at the moment of death. Or:
Having destroyed the five lower chains and spontaneously re-arisen;
3: One attains Nibbana in the first half of the life as a divine brahma. Or:
4: One attains Nibbana in the second half of the life in these pure abodes. Or:
5: One attains Nibbana as a Noble non-returner without effort. Or:
6: One attains Nibbana as a Noble non-returner with some effort. Or:
7: One is bound upstream, surely heading towards the highest Akanittha realm.
When, bhikkhus, these Seven Links to Awakening have been thoroughly developed
and cultivated exactly in this way, these seven fruits & benefits may be expected....

PostSubject: Foul Flesh Frame!   Daily Dhamma Drops from Ceylon! - Page 30 EmptySun Jul 17, 2011 6:29 am

Friends:

The Body is a bone-frame plastered with fat and skin:

The body's nature: 300 bones, jointed by 180 joints, sewn into a chain by 900 sinews,
plastered over with pieces of flesh, enveloped by inner membrane, fat and outer skin,
with 9 openings constantly dribbling and trickling with tears, snot, saliva, slime, urine
and excrement. Its bowels are inhabited by many fold bacteria, parasites and worms,
the home of disease, the source of painful states, perpetually oozing from the nine
orifices like a chronic open boil, and from thousands skin pores the stale sweat seeps,
with bluebottles and their like buzzing round it, which when untended with tooth brush,
washing, shaving, bathing, underclothing and dressing up looks just like a living corpse!
In its natural wild then a body is a stinking nauseating repulsiveness, but by concealing
its private parts under several cloths, by daubing it with various perfumes and salves,
by pranking it with jewellery, it is faked up into a state being mistaken as 'I' & 'mine'!
So men delight in women, and women in men, without perceiving the true nature of this
body's characteristic foulness, now masked by this adventitious adornment. But in the
ultimate sense, there is no place on any body even the size of an atom fit to lust after!
Comically we loove the whole of this 'our precious temple, but when any such bits of it
as head hairs, body hairs, nails, teeth, spittle, snot, excrement or urine have dropped
off the body, then beings will not touch them! Though somewhat absurd, they are now
ashamed, humiliated & disgusted with exactly the same matter as they adored before!
But as long as any one of these disgusting things remains inside the body, though it is
just as repulsive when inside, they take this body as agreeable, desirable, permanent,
pleasant, & 'my beautiful self', since they are wrapped in the murk of ignorance and
dyed with unseen and unrecognised affective greed for a physical self... Vism I 196
