| Friends:Seeing the Elements, Tendencies and Abilities!Once when the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling at Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's Park, numerous Bhikkhus went to the Venerable Anuruddha & exchanged polite greetings with him. Then they sat down to one side& asked the Ven. Anuruddha: Venerable Sir: What is it that the Venerable Anuruddha has developed & cultivated so that he has attained to his famous greatness of direct knowledge? It is, because I have developed & cultivated these 4 Foundations of Awareness that I have won great direct knowledge. What four? Here, friends, I dwell constantly contemplating upon: The Body only as a formed material frame, neither as I, me, mine, nor a self... The Feelings only as passing sensations, neither as I, as mine, nor as my self... The Mind only as temporary mentalities, neither as I, me, mine, nor any ego... All Phenomena only as momentary mental states, not as reality or as existents... while eager, clearly comprehending, & fully aware, thereby removing all desire & frustration rooted in this world! It is, friends, because I have developed & cultivated these 4 Foundations of Awareness that I have become empowered with the suprahuman forces: I see & understand this entire universe with its many & diverse elements as it really is. Furthermore, friends, this awareness make me experience the diversity of possibilities and tendencies in all kinds of beings... Furthermore, friends, it is, friends, because I have developed and fully refined these Four Foundations of Awareness that I see & understand, just as it really is, the degree of maturity in all mental abilities of all other beings and persons... | Subject: Energy is Force! Mon May 11, 2009 7:48 am | |
| Friends:Energy is a Way to Suprahuman Force! The Blessed Buddha once said:When a Bhikkhu develops the Ways to Force that is enriched with concentrated Energy, constructed by effort, by thinking: In this way will my Energy, neither be too slack nor too tense, it will neither be constricted internally, nor scattered externally, then he dwells experiencing both what is in front & what is behind, so above, so also below, so by day, so also at night! Therefore, with a mind all open & unrestricted, he develops the dazzling bright mind, which is pervaded by luminosity... However:What is Energy that is too slack? Energy joined with indifference. This is Energy, that is too slack... What is Energy that is too tense? It is restless & agitated Energy. That is Energy, that is too tense... What is Energy that is constricted internally? It is Energy joined with lethargy & laziness. Inwardly choked! What is Energy that is scattered externally? Energy directed & diverted externally for the 5 sense pleasures... This is called Energy that is scattered & distracted externally... How does one dwell experiencing both the front & what is behind? The perception of front, & back, is well attended to, & thereby well comprehended, well considered, & penetrated by understanding... How does one dwell seeing as below, so above; as above, so below? One reviews this very frame of body upwards from the soles of the feet, & downwards from the tips of the hairs, enclosed in skin, as full of many kinds of impurities: There are in this body: Head-hairs, body-hairs, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, vomit in the stomach, excrement, bile, lymph, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, mucus, saliva, snot, fluid of the joints, and urine... So does one come to see both, what is above, and what is below! How does one dwell by day, so at night; as at night, so by day? Here, at night a Bhikkhu trains the Ways to Force, that is enriched with concentrated Energy, constructed by effort, using the same techniques, qualities, features, & aspects, as he trains during the day. And how, does one dwell with a mind, that is all open & unrestricted, a dazzling bright mind, which is pervaded by luminosity...?Here, always the perception of day-light is well attended to & well resolved upon by determination. It is in exactly this way, that one dwell with a mind, that is all open & unrestricted, a dazzling bright mind, which is pervaded by its very own luminosity... Investigation joined with sloppy carelessness is called Investigation, that is too slack! What is Investigation, that is too tense? Restless, hurried, agitated Investigation is called an Investigation, that is too tense! What is Investigation, that is constricted internally? Investigation done in laziness. This is Investigation that is constricted internally! What is Investigation, that is scattered externally? Investigation that in craving & urge is directed towards the five sense pleasures. | Subject: Unique & Subtle Breathing! Wed May 13, 2009 5:40 am | |
| Friends:Breathing Fulfills the 4 Foundations of Awareness!Once in Savatthi the Blessed Buddha said this: How, Ananda, is this fine concentration by Awareness by Breathing (Anapanasati) developed and cultivated so that it fulfils the Four Foundations of Awareness (Sati) ? Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu: 1: Breathing long, knows, notes & understands: I breathe in & out long! 2: Breathing short, knows, notes & understands: I breathe in & out short! 3: Trains thus: Experiencing this entire body, I will breathe in & out! 4: Trains thus: Calming all bodily activity, I will breathe in & out! On that occasion the Bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body as a group, keen, clearly comprehending, and aware, thereby removing all desire and frustration rooted in this world! This is a certain kind of body, Ananda, a kind of accumulation, just this breathing in and breathing out in itself... Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu: 5: Trains thus: Experiencing enraptured joy, I will breathe in & out! 6: Trains thus: Experiencing a happy pleasure, I will breathe in & out! 7: Trains thus: Experiencing all mental activity, I will breathe in & out! 8: Trains thus: Calming all mental activity, I will breathe in & out! On that occasion the Bhikkhu dwells contemplating feeling as a reaction, keen, clearly comprehending, & aware, thereby removing all desire and frustration rooted in this world! For what reason? Close attention to breathing in & breathing out is also a certain kind of feeling, Ananda... Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu: : 9: Trains thus: Experiencing the present mood, I will breathe in & out! 10: Trains thus: Elating, & satisfying the mind, I will breathe in & out! 11: Trains thus: Concentrating, & focusing mind, I will breathe in & out! 12: Trains thus: Releasing, & liberating the mind, I will breathe in & out! On that occasion the Bhikkhu dwells contemplating mind only as moods, keen, clearly comprehending, & aware, thereby removing all desire and frustration rooted in this world! I tell you, Ananda, there is no gaining concentration by awareness by breathing for one, who is confused, and who lacks clear comprehension of the actually present mentality & mood! Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu: 13: Trains thus: Contemplating impermanence, I will breathe in & out! 14: Trains thus: Contemplating disillusion, I will breathe in & out! 15: Trains thus: Contemplating ceasing, I will breathe in & out! 16: Trains thus: Contemplating relinquishment, I will breathe in & out! On that occasion the Bhikkhu dwells contemplating all phenomena as mental states, keen, clearly comprehending, & aware, thereby removing all desire and frustration rooted in this world! Having by understanding seen what really is the elimination of greed and discontent, he is one who just looks on, over-viewing carefully in imperturbable equanimity... It is, Ananda, when Awareness by Breathing is trained, developed and refined in this very way, that it fulfills the 4 Foundations of Awareness... These 16 steps should be memorized fully. | Subject: Four Fulfilling Seven!! Thu May 14, 2009 7:48 am | |
| Friends:How are the Seven Links to Awakening Fulfilled?Once in Savatthi the Blessed Buddha said this: How, Ananda, are the Four Foundations of Awareness trained and developed so that they fulfil the Seven Links to Awakening? Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu is reflecting upon body only as an accumulation, right on that occasion, unconfused and undistracted awareness is established in that Bhikkhu. Therefore on that occasion the Awareness Link to Awakening is aroused, and as it gradually develops, it reaches fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. Dwelling thus aware, he investigates & examines that state by understanding, Whenever, Ananda, a Bhikkhu dwells investigating a state, on that occasion the Investigation Link to Awakening is aroused, & as it gradually develops by many repetitions, it reaches fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. While he investigates states with understanding, examines them, his energy is aroused without slackening! On that occasion the Energy Link to Awakening is enlivened, & as it gradually develops by many reiterations, it comes to reach fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. When his enthusiastic energy is aroused, there arises in him a rapturous joy! On that occasion the Joy Link to Awakening is instigated, & as it gradually develops by many renewals, it comes to reach fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. Both the body & mind becomes tranquil, in whoever is mentally elated by joy. On that occasion the Tranquillity Link to Awakening is therefore induced, and as it gradually develops by maturation, it reaches fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. In one whose body is tranquil & who is happy, the mind becomes concentrated! On that occasion, the Concentration Link to Awakening is therefore stimulated, & as it gradually develops by training, it reaches fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. He then just looks on this concentrated mind with imperturbable equanimity... On that occasion the Equanimity Link to Awakening is therefore induced, and as it gradually develops by rehearsal, it reaches fulfilment in that Bhikkhu. It is, Ananda, when the four Foundations of Awareness are trained & refined in exactly this very way, that they fulfill the Seven Links to Awakening...! | Subject: Reaching Release! Fri May 15, 2009 8:11 am | |
| Friends:Final Release is Fulfilled by True Wisdom!Once in Savatthi the Blessed Buddha said this: How, Ananda, are the Seven Links to Awakening trained and developed so that they fulfill True Wisdom and Final Release? When a Bhikkhu, Ananda, develops the Awareness Link to Awakening, based upon seclusion, disillusion, & ceasing, then it matures into release! When he develops the Investigation Link to Awakening, based upon total seclusion, disillusion, & ceasing, then it culminates into mental release! When he develops the Energy Link to Awakening, based upon seclusion, disillusioned disgust, & ceasing of craving, then it blossoms into release! When he develops the Joy Link to Awakening, based on solitary seclusion, detached disgust, and ceasing of craving, then it progresses into release! When he develops the Tranquillity Link to Awakening, based upon complete isolation, disillusion, & ceasing, then it comes to a climax of final release! When he develops the Concentration Link to Awakening, while alone and reclusive, undeceived, & cooled, there is breakthrough of mental release! When he develops the Equanimity Link to Awakening, based upon seclusion, disillusioned disgust, & ceasing of craving, then it flourishes into release! It is, Ananda, when the Seven Links to Awakening are trained & refined in this way, that they fulfil the causes of True Wisdom and Final Release! | Subject: Going Upwards! Sat May 16, 2009 7:50 am | |
| Friends:There is many folly ways, but only One really good Way! The Blessed Buddha once said:Some priests postulate this as the way going upwards: "Get up early and walk facing east. Do not avoid a pit, or a cliff abyss, or a stump, or a thorny place, or a village or a cesspool! You should expect death wherever you fall. Thus, good man, with the breakup of the body, after death, you will be reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world." This the praxis of the priests, Bhikkhus, is a foolish & stupid way, since it does neither lead to revulsion, to disillusion, to ceasing, to peace, to direct knowledge, to Enlightenment, nor to Nibbana! However, Bhikkhus, I will explain the very way Going Upwards in the Noble One's Discipline, that way, which leads to utter revulsion, to disillusion, to ceasing, to peace, to safe knowledge, to Enlightenment, to Nibbana: Any Noble Disciple possesses a sure confirmed confidence in the Buddha thus: Worthy, & perfectly self-Enlightened is the Buddha! in the Dhamma thus: Perfectly formulated is the Buddha-Dhamma, visible right here & now, in the Sangha thus: Perfectly training is this Noble Sangha of the Buddha's disciples, and He possesses the morality liked by the Noble Ones, unbroken ... which leads to concentration! This, Bhikkhus & friends, is that way going upwards, which leads to utter revulsion, to disillusion, to ceasing, to Peace, to direct knowledge and experience, to Enlightenment, and to Nibbana! | Subject: Higher Release! Sun May 17, 2009 6:41 am | |
| Friends:The 4 Brahmaviharas deliver mind into a Higher State! The Blessed Buddha once said:The Noble Disciple, Bhikkhus & friends, freed from greed and grudge, unconfused, alert, attentive and clearly comprehending, with mind full of kind friendliness ... of compassionate pity ... of altruistic joy ... and of imperturbable equanimity, pervades first one direction, then the second, then the 3rd one, then the 4th one, just as above, so below, & all around! Thus sympathetic with all, embracing all, he pervades the whole world, & the entire universe with a vast mind, refined, infinite, freed from all hate and any ill-will. And he understands: Formerly my mind was limited and undeveloped. Now, however, is my mind unlimited and developed, and no limited behaviour based on a narrow intention will remain here or persist! What do you think, Bhikkhus & friends: If a boy from his early childhood develops kind friendliness, compassionate pity, altruistic joy, and quite imperturbable equanimity, will he then still be able to do bad evil deeds? No, Venerable One... But, if he no longer does bad deeds, will suffering then still attack him? Certainly not. Venerable One. How should anyone, doing no evil actions, still be attacked by suffering! Therefore should kind friendliness .. compassionate pity .. altruistic joy & imperturbable equanimity be developed, by all men, women & beings! No man or woman, on leaving this life, can keep this body. Any mortal has only his mind as base, mediator, creator, controller and protector! The Bhikkhu, however, knows: Whatever formerly I have done of bad deeds with this material body, all that I still have to atone for here, and after that, then nothing of it will follow me. So developed, the release of the mind by kind friendliness, by compassionate pity, by altruistic joy ... & by imperturbable equanimity, leads to Never-Return, unless the wise monk already during this life penetrates to a higher deliverance than that! | Friends:Moderation when Eating is very Advantageous! The Blessed Buddha once said:How, Bhikkhus & friends, is material food to be considered? Imagine, two persons, husband & wife, with only few provisions, are wandering through a desert with their only child, their beloved and dear little son. However in the middle of the desert, their food runs out! Then this husband & wife think: Let us kill our only child, our loved dear little son, prepare dried flesh, & thus while eating this cross the rest of the desert. But, while eating this flesh, they beat their breasts, weeping and lamenting: Where is our own little son now? Where is our only child? What do you think, Bhikkhus & friends: Do these two people eat their food for amusement, or for pleasure, or to become beautiful? No, Venerable Sir. Do they eat this foul food, their only son's flesh only to escape the desert? Indeed so, Venerable Sir. Even and Exactly so, Bhikkhus & friends, should one regard all material food! | Subject: The 10 Experiences! Thu May 21, 2009 5:46 am | |
| Friends:Experiencing Right Things might cure illness instantly!Once when Venerable Girimananda was sick, then the Buddha said to Ven. Ananda:If you, Ananda, would go to Ven. Girimananda & explain to him the 10 experiences, it may be that Girimananda's illness will be cured instantly! And which are these ten experiences? They are: 1: The experience of Impermanence, and inconstancy (Anicca-Sañña). 2: The experience of No-Self, Egolessness, and Impersonality (Anatta-Sañña). 3: The experience of Disgust, Loathsomeness, and Foulness (Asubha-Sañña). 4: The experience of Danger, Damage, and Disadvantage (Adinava-Sañña). 5: The experience of Leaving Behind, Removal, and Giving up (Pahana-Sañña). 6: The experience of Disillusion, Dispassion, and Detachment (Viraga-Sañña). 7: The experience of Ceasing, Stilling, and Final Finishing (Nirodha-Sañña). 8: The experience of Disappointment with entire world (Sabbaloka-Anabhirati-Sañña). 9: The experience of Transience of all formations (Sabbasankharesu Anicca-Sañña). 10: The experience of Breathing Awareness (Anapanasati-Sañña). Having learnt and fully memorized these ten experiences from the Blessed Buddha, the Venerable Ananda went to the Venerable Girimananda and recited these ten experiences to him. | Subject: Complete Detachment! Sat May 23, 2009 7:10 am | |
| Friends!Complete Detachment by Relinquishing All!Friends, we should train in this very way:I will not cling to neither the eye, nor to the ear, nor to the nose, nor to the tongue, nor to the body, nor to the mind... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on awareness of any sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, nor any mental states... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on any visual contact, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, or any mental contact... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on any feeling aroused from all these visual, otherwise sensed or ... mental contacts... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on any form, emotion, perception, construction, or any deliberately directed attention! Thus will my consciousness neither depend on any solidity, fluidity, heat, motion, space, nor on any sort of mentality whatsoever... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on any infinitude of space, any infinitude of consciousness, any sphere of nothingness, any sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, nor on any other subtle state... Thus will my consciousness neither depend on anything in this world, nor on anything in any other transcendent world beyond this world… Thus will my consciousness be independent of what is seen, heard, sensed, cognized, encountered, searched for & examined by the mind... It will be without base, source, & object, unconnected, unconstrained, unrelated, autonomous, fully freed, sovereign, sublime and supreme… This -only this- itself leads to the released liberation of final freedom!!! | Friends:Development of Infinite All-Embracing Kindness! The Blessed Buddha once said:Bhikkhus and Friends: There are these four infinite mental states: The Bhikkhu pervades all beings with all-embracing friendliness... The Bhikkhu encompass all creatures with universal & endless pity... The Bhikkhu permeates all individuals with infinite and mutual joy... The Bhikkhu suffuses all living mortals with unlimited equanimity... First in one direction, then in the 2nd, then the 3rd, & finally the 4th , above, below, all around, in every location, unifying himself with all beings, he pervades the entire universe with a kind and all-embracing friendliness, with an all-encircling compassion & pity, with an all-enveloping mutual and altruistic joy, and with an all-encompassing imperturbable equanimity, fully utilizing a refined mind, made great, vast, profound, infinite, immeasurable, released from all hate, anger, irritation, opposition and stubbornness... Source: DN 33Because of hate, overwhelmed and obsessed by hate, one lives while doing evil deeds, speaking wrong words, and thinking bad thoughts... Thus one neither really understands one's own welfare, nor the welfare of others, nor the welfare of both... If, however, this hate is overcome and subdued, then one lives while doing good deeds, speaking kind words, and thinking advantageous thoughts... Therefore one really knows, what is one's own welfare, for the welfare of others, & for the welfare of both one self & others... Source: AN 3:55 Infinitude: Liza Berzofsky. Oil on Aluminium. | Subject: Kammic Asymmetry... Sun May 31, 2009 7:34 am | |
| Friends:The Kammic causation of future is asymmetric! Why is it easy to repeat doing much bad, while doing good is hard to do even once? Quickly one ruins one's own future by doing just one single wrong or evil action, just like one single drop of ink ruins the clarity of even a large glass of water... However: Slowly one purifies one's past behaviour by accumulating of numerous good deeds, just like single drops of water slowly or never clarifies even a small glass of ink...This asymmetry propels beings downward: The difficulty of doing even a little good; The ease of doing even much wrong evil... Sends most beings into the downfall! ASYMMETRY-1Easy & swift is it to do what is detrimental, Painful both to oneself and for others. While that, which is advantageous to both oneself & others, is quite difficult to do. Dhammapada 163 ASYMMETRY-2Easy it is to see the faults of others. Hard it is to see one's own flaws. We seek after others faults like filtering even pure water, but we cover up our own flaws like a gambler hide his cards. | Subject: Origin is Mental: It from Bit! Tue Jun 02, 2009 5:34 am | |
| Friends:Some Clues about the Fundamental Mentality creating all Existence:Observer Participation: The world emerges, when it is observed! The world is not 'out there' independent of the mind, but it is indeed synthesized by a mass-collective asking of yes-no questioning by many being’s observation, through an immense number of prior universes passing from big bang to implosion (big crunch)! This creation by creating binary information can be epitomized in the dogma: - It from Bit - !!! John Archibald Wheeler - Quantum Physicist, Princeton.Information is Physical and not Subjective:Any gain in information (which is a measure of order) induces a decrease in entropy (which is a thermodynamic measure of disorder)! The creation and transfer of information happening at any measurement & observation, thus changes the energetic state & thus future development of the observed system! Observation itself - by definition, per se - thus influence, transform & change the observed object, including the entire world... Modified freely after W.H. Zurek. Quantum Physicist, Los Alamos.Appearance by intentional determination of directed attention:We are actually bringing about, what seems to be happening to us! Thomas Mann. PhilosopherWhat Exists is identical with the thought that recognizes it! Parmenides of Elea (515-450 BC)Phenomena appears and are created by the very act of directing attention to them... This advertence which is deliberate, specific and intentional is produced by desire... The 'scene' or 'image' appears only, and exactly when actually observing it! Just Modes of Conceptualization:Time and space are not conditions in which we live, but modes by which we think... Albert Einstein.Time and space are not objective things, but mentally imposed orders of things... LeibnizJust Cause and Effect:Intentional action (karma = Kamma) is decisive information about to do this & not that! This information creation reduces the universal thermodynamic entropy (degree of disorder)... This newly created order limits, restricts & thus affects the future evolution of the universal system. The probability of certain future events happening have thereby been increased, while the probability of other future events have been reduced. Any intention by any being thereby modifies & partitions the potentiality of the universe - seen as a giant network of cause and effect- which then naturally later falls out and manifests as another - now intentionally changed! - actuality... The moral efficacy of kamma = karma = action is therefore not a religious metaphysical postulate, but a simple & ultra-basic inevitable consequence of the mentally derived nature of the universe itself... Morality is thus a natural and inevitable Law on par with gravity: Do good and get pleasure (Sukha)... Do evil and get pain (Dukkha)... The Buddha on the ORIGIN:Intention always comes first, Intention is of all states the primer, By intention are all things initiated, By thought of mind are all phenomena formed! So - if with good intention one thinks, speaks or acts Joy surely follows one like the never-leaving shadow! However!!! - if with evil intention one thinks, speaks or acts Pain certainly follows one like the wheel follows the car. Dhammapada 1 + 2 The Buddha was first on pragmatic Radical Empiricism:Attention is the proximate cause of all phenomena!Samyutta Nikaya V 184http://What-Buddha-Said.net/drops/Causes_of_sati.htm The Participant Observer principle:The universe as a self-excited circuit: Starting from small (thin right line) it gradually grows denser (thick left line) by observers participating in creation, by merely intentionally (mental causation!) observing what is gradually emerging! If one is always glad at the success of others, one will always be content!!! If one is never glad at the success of others, one will always be discontent!!! Therefore is contentment caused by an altruistic mental state & not by external richness... Example: Rich people possessing all the things they ever desired, can still be very discontent! All Buddha's disciples undertakes a 3-fold Mental Training (ti-sikkha): 1: Training in higher Morality (adhi-sila-sikkha).2: Training in higher Mentality (adhi-citta-sikkha).3: Training in higher Understanding (adhi-pañña-sikkha).Higher Morality is 3 fold:It is Right Speech (samma-vaca)It is Right Action (samma-kammanta)It is Right Livelihood (samma-ajiva)Higher Mentality is also 3 fold:It is Right Effort (samma-vayama)It is Right Awareness (samma-sati)It is Right Concentration (samma-samadhi) Higher Understanding is 2 fold:It is Right Motivation (samma-sankappa)It is Right View (samma-ditthi)The Blessed Buddha once said:When founded on pure morality, then concentration produces a high fruit and blessing. When based on deep concentration, then understanding brings a high fruit and blessing. Being endowed with understanding, the mind is freed from all the mental fermentations related to sensing, becoming, views/opinions and ignorance. This - in itself- is releasing! It is through not understanding, not penetrating and not attaining noble higher morality... noble higher mentality.. and noble higher understanding... that both you and I had to pass through this round of rebirths for such an immensely long time, without reaching the bliss of deliverance, the bliss of peace and, the bliss of noble higher release: Enlightenment...
